The Greeks got much of their knowledge of architecture and building from the Phoenicians, from whom they also learned the alphabet (as did we all). Mnesikles, the oft overlooked member of team Parthenon, was Phoenician. Pythagoras' father, Mnesarchus, was Phoenician, from Tyre, where Pythagoras went to school before studying in Egypt and Babylon. Pythagoras learned the sciences of proportion and music in Babylon.
